President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has sent a message of condolence following the explosion in the Lebanese capital, Beirut resulting in multiple casualties.

Taking to Twitter this morning, President Solih said that Maldives stands in solidarity with the people of Lebanon following the unspeakable carnage and loss of life caused by the deadly explosion in Beirut yesterday.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families and all affected by this terrible tragedy.” President Solih’s tweet said.

While the exact cause of the explosion is still unclear at this time, Lebanese officials have said that 2,740 tons of ammonium nitrate stored at the port six years ago, was involved in the explosion.

Following the incident, the President of Lebanon, Michel Aoun, has declared a state of emergency in his country.
