Schools in Malé City are to remain closed for the next two weeks, following the recent surge in COVID-19 cases.

Following the Eid and Mid-Term holidays, schools were set to reopen on August 9th.

A statement issued by the Education Ministry noted that schools reopened for Grades 1-12 across the nation with the exception of Malé City on July 1st. Schools in Malé City were opened for Key Stages 4 and 5 (Grades 9-12) only, while schools were to reopen for Grades 7-8 on August 16th with schools set to reopen on August 9th following the mid-term holidays.

However the Ministry has said that with the current COVID-19 situation and advise from the Health Protection Agency (HPA), schools in Malé City will remain closed for a period of two weeks starting from August 9th to August 19th.

The statement also added that online classes will be in effect during this period, and that the decision to reopen schools will be made with regards to the situation in the future.
