Ibrahim Shafiu, 37, has been charged with sexual abuse of a child while in a position of power.
Prosecutor General's Office confirmed that charges against Shafiu has now been filed to the Criminal Court. He has been charged with “carrying out a sexual act on a child while in a position of power” under Article 9 of the Special Provisions Act to Deal with Child Sex Offenders.
A jail sentence of 15 to 18 years will be issued if he is found guilty of the charges.
Police further revealed that upon presenting him to Nilandhoo Magistrate Court, the court had ordered to remand him until the end of his trial since he is being charged with child sexual abuse. The court's decision was based on the fact that the suspect might influence those involved in the case or try to destroy incriminating evidence against him.
The court ordered to remand him in a custodial jail until the investigation was over after which he is ordered to be remanded at a remand jail until the end of trial.
