Judicial Service Commission has decided to suspend Criminal Court Judge Ismail Rasheed for a period of 60 days.

The judge had dropped all seven charges against former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb earlier this month. Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem had heavily criticized the decision and added that the issue will be presented to the JSC as well.

A statement issued by the JSC noted that they have decided to suspend Judge Rasheed for 60 days pending an investigation into a disciplinary issue of the judge.

The commission said it made the decision “based on the nature of the case, the evidence presented in the case, a possible hindrance to the investigation if Judge Rasheed continues to serve as a judge throughout the investigation, and the principle of preserving the integrity of the judiciary."

They further added that details of the disciplinary violations will be made public after the investigation is concluded.

Adeeb walked free on July 14th after the Criminal Court dropped all seven charges against him by the state. The seven charges against him are two counts of embezzlement, unlawful influence to obtain an unfair advantage, and misuse of official capacity.
