Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem has said that even without a plea deal, they have enough documentation to press 150 charges against former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb, which amounts up to 800 years in prison time.
Adeeb walked free on Tuesday after seven charges against him were dropped by the Criminal Court. The charges include two counts of embezzlement, unlawful influence to obtain an unfair advantage, and misuse of official capacity.
Today's hearing saw Judge Rasheed declare that such an act can be perceived as an act of “torture”. He added that medical care in exchange for the admittance of guilt was not something that the PG office can do, highlighting that the plea deal was not backed by the criminal procedure code.
With the charges being dropped, there are no more cases against Adeeb in the courts.
Speaking during a press conference today, PG Hussain Shameem said that even though the plea deal was rejected by the court, the trial should have moved forward in accordance to the laws, adding that the state has enough documentary evidence to reach a fair verdict.
He noted that they have documentation to press 150 charges against Adeeb which will amount to 800 years in prison time.
PG Shameem further noted that they are seeking a travel ban against him since Adeeb had previously tried to flee and that the case will be appealed at the High Court.
