Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail has stated that their target is to repatriate about 20,000 undocumented workers in the Maldives.
Speaking during the parliament debate regarding the migrant worker crisis, Minister Fayyaz stated that about 95% of Bangladeshi workers in the Maldives are undocumented. This amounts up to about 80,000 - 100,000 workers.
He further noted that 4,000 Bangladeshis have been repatriated so far with the full cooperation of the Bangladeshi government. If repatriations are forced, the necessary documentation would be hard to obtain according to the Minister.
He also added that there were 2,800 undocumented workers among the 4,000 workers who have been repatriated so far.
