Commissioner of Police, Mohamed Hameed, has said that an investigation is underway looking into how the officers who attended the alleged sexual assault on the safari boat this past weekend.

The Commissioner made the announcement on Twitter today.

In his statement, the Commissioner said that Police Professional Standards Command, National Integrity Committee (NIC) and Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) have started investigations.

Following up on the tweet, the Police Commissioner said that “the exercise of police powers and discretion by officers is derived from law and established legal procedures. Eagerly awaiting the outcome of the inquiries in to this case.”

The two suspects arrested following the rape on the Safari boat on Friday morning was released on Saturday. Police said that they were released due to insufficient evidence.
