MP for Meedhoo constituency, Rozaina Adam has said that whether the culprit is someone’s husband, father or a brother, a rape would be a rape.

She has made the remark at a time where an allegation of rape is being pointed towards the husband of a sitting MP in connection to the rape of a foreign woman on a safari yacht the Hulhumale’ lagoon.

“Rape is rape, regardless of whose husband or brother or father, did it. If someone is raped, the perpetrator HAS to be brought to justice. Period.” said the Meedhoo MP last night on Twitter. “It is wrong to circulate our photos with regard to this bcos none of us raped anyone. Just for clarification, neither did my husband.”

Maldives Police Service has confirmed yesterday that the rape of a woman on a safari yacht was reported in the early hours of Friday morning. And two 39-year-old local men that were taken into custody from the scene of the crime, where released due to insufficient evidence.

This was followed by the criticism of the public towards the police and the government with some people alleging that the suspects were released through political influence.

Some people have alleged that the suspects arrested in connection to the rape case is the husband of the MP for Hinnavaru constituency and Chair of the Human Rights and Gender Committee, Jeehan Mahmood and another family member.

Maldives Police Service has said that the case is being investigated even though the suspects were released.
