Former President Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has said that a world-class investigation was launched into the alleged coup that toppled the government of MDP back in 2012.

President Waheed assumed office after the resignation of then-President Mohamed Nasheed.

Speaking during an event at PPM, he said that the investigation looked into the alleged coup and was a complete world-class investigation that was transparent and looked at the events that lead up to 7th February, 2012. He noted that he had no part and that he could not be held accountable for what happened back then. He however added that he does not condone the events that lead up to it.

President Waheed stressed that the Presidential Commission to investigate the matter was made with members who were free from any political influence and belonged to no political parties. However international figures were appointed to oversee the commission after MDP disapproved the initial commission.

As such, the commission was overseen by a retired judge from the Supreme Court of Singapore, in addition to two other international figures.

He noted that the report by the commission was very extensive and thorough and that he had no influence on the commission itself. Hence he highlighted that a world-class investigation has been conducted into the alleged coup that ousted the MDP government.

President Nasheed has however refuted such claims and added that if the events were investigated again, it would be very clear that it was a coup.

President Waheed in response to this had said that he would fully cooperate into a reinvestigation if and should that happen.
