Chairman of the Elections Commission of Maldives, Ahmed Shareef has revealed that discussions are ongoing to hold the Local Council Elections in March of 2021.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the constitution was amended to postpone the election till next year, with current council members to remain in office till a new election takes place.

Speaking during a tv program on PSM, Shareef noted that according to the law, the election needs to be held before the month of Ramadan next year. As such, the commission is currently discussing to hold the elections early March.

However he stressed that the exact date of election is yet to be decided.
