Commissioner of Police has revealed that he has requested an order to remand the alleged rapist of the 11-year old in a Male' Guest House until the end of the trial.

CP Mohamed Hameedh noted that this was the first such request in 5 years.

"Deriving authority from the law on Effecting Special Procedures Against Child Sexual Offenders (12/2009) I have requested the PG Office to apply for an order to have the alleged rapist of the 11-year-old, remanded in custody until the trial outcome. First such request in 5 years," he said in a tweet.

Police revealed that the alleged rape of an 11-year-old in a guest house in Male' was first reported to them on June 10th. Police arrested a 38-year-old in connection to this case last night.

The Maldives Police Service has advised cation during this unprecedented time to ensure children are protect from those who seek to exploit them via the internet and not to send children out with strangers.

Authorities have advised to report such cases to the Family and Child Protective Service of the Police by calling 3000-600 and 9790-163 or the Ministry of Gender, Family and Social Services hotline 1412.
