Housing Minister Aminath Athifa has resigned from her ministerial position.

"One" can confirm that she has submitted her letter of resignation to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

President Solih's first Housing Minister Athifa had stated health complications as a driving reason behind her resignation.

Athifa has been seeking treatment for a complicated illness for years and has frequently sought medical treatment abroad. She assumed her ministerial post after having recovered a bit.

However, the President's Office is yet to confirm her resignation.

She was assigned a cabinet slot from the Maldives Reform Movement (MRM) headed by former strongman Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.

Her resignation comes at a time when public criticism has been widespread after the Housing Ministry had issued a statement which noted that she had mistakenly said that 7,000 housing units in Hulhumale' Phase II will be handed over to the selected applicants by end of July.
