Speaker of the Parliament, the former President of Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed, has said that it cannot be assumed that the Free Trade Agreement signed with between the Chinese government and the Maldivian government is still intact.

The Free Trade Agreement was signed between the Chinese government and the Maldivian government on December 7th, 2017, during the tenure of former President Abdulla Yameen.

Former Economic Minister - who is currently the Maavah MP, Mohamed Saeed signed the agreement back then while China's Minister of Commerce and Industries Zhong Shan signed on behalf of the Chinese government.

MDP who currently is the ruling party largely opposed the agreement as an opposition back then.

Speaking during today's Parliament sitting, Speaker Nasheed said that even though the 18th Session of Parliament had compiled a Free Trade Agreement, no work had been done under the agreement. Hence he added that it cannot be assumed that the agreement is still intact.
