Speaker of Parliament and Former President Mohamed Nasheed has stated that Gulhi Falhu work is important and that it brings many benefits but it can’t be allowed to destroy local reefs.
In a tweet sent out on Sunday, he stated that the Parliament and EPA is recommending new and stronger measures to protect the coral reefs near the ongoing dredging work in Gulhi Falhu.
He added that he believes that the Government will accept these recommendations.
Earlier he had also tweeted regarding the importance of the project alongside a photo of him with the Director General of EPA.
EPA had previously said that the project did not have major effects on the local reef but did note of possible destruction. Reclamation of 192 hectares of land to develop a cargo hub is currently ongoing at the reef.
