MP for Kendhoo constituency, Ali Hussain, has said that the Gulhifalhu project is has a massive environmental impact and directly opposes the decentralized system of governing.
As the first phase of the land reclamation is underway for the Kaafu Atoll Gulhifalhu port development, the MP for Vilimale’ constituency, Ahmed Usham has filed an emergency case at the parliament to take quickly investigate and take action with allegations of the project damaging the reefs of the neighboring islands.
In a tweet sent out today by MP Ali Hussain the project does not make financial sense during the current circumstances. He said that the project also lessens the economic and social profits gained from the natural beauty.
MP Hussain said that it is unacceptable to acquire the 20 million kodi meters of sand needed for the project from the inner and outer perimeters of other islands. He said that despite these things, the group of contractors assigned to the project will reap benefits.
The Environment Protection Agency (EPA) had recently said that the project does not have any major effect on the reef of Vilimale’.
