Maldives Parliament has prepared to resume their sittings inside the Parliament Chamber with safety measures, starting Tuesday.

The decision to resume sittings at the parliament comes after a long break, where lawmakers have been meeting virtually to attend parliament sittings from home.

After a brief hiatus due to the Public Health Emergency that was issued due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, parliament sittings resumed on March 30th.

In addition to parliament sittings, committee meetings and presenting of public workers to committee meetings were also carried out virtually.

While the parliament is set to resume sittings in the chamber, the parliament administration has revealed what safety measures will be taken to ensure the safety of lawmakers. As such they revealed that only 42 people will be allowed inside the chamber at any given time.

In addition to this, lawmakers will be seated within a safe distance as dictated by the Health Protection Agency (HPA). Two members will not be allowed near one table at the same time.

Voting procedures will also be carried out in such a manner with certain procedures. As such, after a lawmaker votes the lawmaker will leave the chamber in order to allow the remaining lawmakers to cast their votes.

The minimum required number of staff will be used for administrative purposes, and all staff along with lawmakers are required to wear face masks.

These procedures and arrangements will be overseen by the Parliament Seargent at Arms as instructed by Speaker Mohamed Nasheed.
