Haa Dhaalu Kurinbi Island Council has accused an officer of the Maldives Police Service of disrupting social peace on the island.

Talking to One Online, the Kurinbi Council said that the case was brought to the attention of the Council last night and it has been reported to the police as well.

Kurinbi Council has also issued a statement condemning the actions of the police officer for disrupting the social peace.

The statement said that a police officer on the island has taken to social media to criticize the precautionary measures in the island in response to the COVID-19 epidemic in the country and stating that the Council has no authority to do anything if those measures are violated.

The officer in question took to social media stating that Councils have no authority to enforce a quarantine and stay at home order according to the Local Government Authority Act and quarantines are enforced by the Health Protection Agency (HPA).

Kurinbi Island Council said that the social media post has made it difficult to maintain the safety measures in place on the island. The Council said that they strongly condemn such actions from a police officer, someone who shoulders the responsibility and is trusted to maintaining peace and harmony.

The Council have said that the people of the island are supporting the Council decision to take measures proactively.
