National Emergency Operation Center Spokesperson, Mabrouk Azeez has stated that the earliest possible date to re-open schools would be on June 14th.
Responding to a question at the NEOC press conference, Spokesperson Mohamed Mabrook Abdul Aziz said that the Ministry of Education has planned the school openings are based on three scenarios. And now they are discussing with health experts to decide which scenario to follow.
He said that according to the Education Minister, discussions are underway with the relevant authorities on making a decision on reopening schools but the earliest possible reopening will be after the upcoming school holidays, in June.
While the Academic Calendar dictates that the schools will be opening on 14 June after the first term holidays, schools in the country has been closed for over a month amid the COVID-19 epidemic in the country.
So far 1216 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in the Maldives while four people have passed away from the illness; three elderly Maldivians and a Bangladeshi national.
