The Maldivian parliament has passed the amendment proposed by the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Eva Abdulla for a financial audit of the government spending, debt and foreign aid during the COVID-19 crisis in the country.

MP for Galolhu-South constituency, MP Eva Abdulla proposed the amendment to be included in the report by the Finance Committee of the parliament on the parliament’s perspective of the government’s program to help the families and businesses affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

At the parliament sitting, both the report and MP Eva’s amendment to perform an audit every quarter, was passed as well.

The amendment states that every government institute must present a financial report after an audit every quarter that shows spending, free-aid and debt. The report must be prepared within 30 days after each quarter.

Presenting the amendment, MP Eva said that auditing the government spending, aid, debt and ownerships is the responsibility of the Auditor General under the Auditing Laws.

And during these extraordinary times amid the COVID-19 pandemic, it is an important responsibility to the people to audit the spending on budget, and the free aid and debt as they develops.
