After putting the bill to delay the Local Council Election to January 2021 on the agenda, the parliament sitting scheduled for today has been cancelled.
The parliament office said that the sitting was cancelled upon the request of the Speaker of the Parliament, the former President of Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed. Along with the sitting today, all the parliament sittings for the week was also cancelled.
According to the parliament office, the sittings were cancelled for the week to let the committees finish the important work.
The Speaker of the Parliament has assigned to various parliament committees to assess the solutions presented in the debate to implement the government’s plan with the impact on businesses due to the precautions put in place amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
And so, some the parliament committees have tasked to assess 17 aspects and prepare reports while others have fewer things to assess to be completed within a week.
Hence, the parliament committees have been bringing in heads of government bodies to review and research to complete their reports.
