President sends letter to Chinese President, requests ease for Chinese loans

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has sent a letter to Chinese President Xi Jinping, requesting an ease for the loans granted by China to the Maldives.

Speaking during a press conference today, President Solih highlighted that while the Maldives have a lot of pending loans, the majority of those loans are from China. As such he noted that the previous government had run a lot of developmental projects with the assistance of the Chinese government.

He noted that negotiations are ongoing to ease the repayments for those loans, and that a letter has been sent to Chinese President regarding the situation. However, an official reply is yet to be received.

President Solih expressed hope that the Chinese government will helo during such a time.
