President decides to close Maldivian border, ban inbound passengers


President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has decided to close Maldivian borders starting 27th March, effectively banning all inbound passengers.

President Solih made the announcement while speaking to the Press on Wednesday. He noted that the steps being taken to contain the spread of the virus are good, though it cannot be determined that an outbreak is impossible in the Maldives.

Hence, the Maldives has decided to stop issuing on-arrival visas starting March 27. Hence no foreign national will be able to fly in to the Maldives, until further notice.

The President also noted that the Maldivian economy is experiencing heavy losses due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, especially businesses.

To recover from those losses, BML will be providing MVR 308 million to resorts and guesthouses will SDFC loan repayments for SMEs will be postponed as well.
