President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has urged all SAARC countries to work together to combat Covid-19.

Speaking on behalf of Maldives during the SAARC videoconference initiated by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Solih said that one country cannot fight such a dangerous virus on their own. He added that we can only combat it with a combined effort.

President Solih had also agreed to PM Modi's suggestion of establishing a regional policy regarding Covid-19. As such, he stressed that three points should be taken into consideration when developing said policy.

Under this, the President noted that it was important to further strengthen the relations between the Health Emergency Agencies in all countries, sharing the information received to one with each other in a timely manner. He also added that a long term plan needs to be there in order to recover from the damages that Covid-19 will cause.

President Solih revealed that the Maldivian economy has already been hit due to the virus and added that if tourist arrivals continued to decline on the same trajectory, huge losses would be suffered by the Maldivian economy.
