At the close of the deadline for the Local Council Election, the main party in the government coalition, MDP, has 876 candidates running while all the other parties combined have 879 candidates along with 680 independent candidates.

The election set for 4 April 2020 will see a total of 2435 candidates with 1817 candidates for the women’s development committees.

Speaking at the Elections Commission press conference last night, President of the Commission, Ahmed Shareef, announced that the validity of the candidate applications for the two elections.

Candidates for the Local Council Election:

  • MDP – 876 candidates
  • PPM – 679 candidates
  • Jumhoory Party – 127 candidates
  • Adhaalath Party – 30 candidates
  • MDA - 22 candidates
  • MMR - 16 candidates
  • MSLDP – 4 candidates
  • DRP - 1 candidates
  • Independent candidates – 680

In the Council Election, 15 candidates from 12 islands have confirmed their seats. They are 13 candidates from MDP and two independent candidates.

Candidates for the Women’s Development Committees Election:

  • MDP – 722 candidates
  • PPM - 517 candidates
  • Jumhoory Party - 56 candidates
  • Adhaalath Party - 25 candidates
  • MDA - 20 candidates
  • MRM - 4 candidates
  • Independent candidates – 473

Members have been confirmed to the development committees in 22 islands. Three islands have fewer candidates than the law dictates.
