Former Housing Minister and the mayoral candidate from PPM for Male’ City, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has said that differentiating between the capital Male’ and the other islands in the country are not the thinking of the people living in the capital, but that of a few people on the frontlines of MDP.
Speaking at the PPM event last night to protest the prison sentenced passed on the former President, Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, the former Housing Minister at the Yameen Presidency criticized the current government saying that differentiating between the capital and other islands is a policy of the current government. He said that some MPs and cabinet ministers believe that to be true as well.
Dr. Muizzu said that no citizen of the country is going to accept differentiating treatment between the capital and other islands. He said that aside from the people from the Male’, a large number of people living in the capital migrated from the islands and have been there for a long time.
And so, the Local Council Election is an opportunity to change the mentality of differential treatment.
While the former Housing Minister has made these remarks, the debate of the differential treatment of islands was recently heated at the parliament as well.
The debate began after the MP for South Henveiru constituency, Hussain Shaheem compared the differential treatment between Male’ and other islands to the state of Palestine on Raajje TV’s “Falasurukhee” program.
The comment was met with criticism from MDP members as well. And with the comment being greatly condemned by the public and politicians alike, MP Shaheem said that most people misunderstood his meaning and apologized to the public.
