Former Foreign Minister Dunya Maumoon has stated that she is expressing her individual opinions and that there was no need to link those to her father and Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom or her uncle and Former President Abdulla Yameen.
Dunya Maumoon made the statement during an interview to One Online.
Dunya made the statement in response to questions by One, after she faced severe backlash for a tweet which claimed that "each President locks the former up using political influence on the judiciary". Senior members of ruling MDP including the President of the party and Speaker of Parliament, Mohamed Nasheed had strongly criticised the tweet.
Dunya noted that even though she did not witness the trial of President Yameen upclose, she has heard the concerns of his supporters.
She further asserted that during her tenure as the Foreign Minister, she had defended Nasheed, when President Yameen decided to prosecute him on charges of terorrism.
Dunya added that the trial of Nasheed during the presidency of President Yameen left great room for questions regarding the evidence and arguments submitted by the prosecution. She went on to compare that trial the trial of President Yameen, noting such similarities where questions have been raised on the evidence provided to prosecute President Yameen.
In response to her tweets, President Nasheed said that "it’s hard to listen to [President] Gayoom‘s family talk about ill treatment when that regime tortured a whole generation of Maldivians, kept a torture log book (adhab foiy), and studiously documented their brutality".
His tweet further asked not to antagonise his children.
Dunya however revealed to One that she has never specifically tweet about Nasheed nor his children.
