Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail has submitted the Ministry's findings with regards to minimum wage to the Parliament, and has asked for their advise on setting a minimum wage.
Starting off today's parliament session, Speaker Mohamed Nasheed revealed that the Report on Minimum Wage by Salary and Wage Advisory Board, Report by International Labor Organisation as well as the Economic Ministry's findings on setting. a minimum wage has been submitted to the Parliament by Minister Fayyaz.
Speaker Nasheed added that the Minister has requested that the Parliament review all submissions, and get back to him with their opinion on the matter. He has since forwarded the submissions to the Parliament Committee on Public Finance.
While the Minister seeks the Parliament's opinion on this, the Parliament has drafted a Bill on minimum wage by a special committee. Minister Fayyaz had previously noted that the Ministry will set a minimum wage by the end of the ongoing month.
In a tweet sent out on February 11th, the Minister said that after discussions on minimum wage and regulations, all of it would be made public by the end of the month. State had submitted an amendment to the Employment Act, which grants the Minister the power to set a minimum wage for the working class.
The amendment dictates that the minimum wage would be set by the Economic Minister with the advise of a special board.
