Former Police Commissioner and current MP for Thimarafushi constituency, Abdulla Riyaz has said that there are doubts about the authenticity of the report on the death of the former MP for Ungoofaaru constituency, Dr. Afrashim Ali, prepared by the Presidential Commission Investigating Disappearances and Deaths.
Speaking on CNM’s “Ithurukaafu” program last night, Riyaz said that after the Commission’s report was delivered to the parliament, he made a request to the National Security Committee bring in the Commission to inquire about the report. However, the parliament which has an MDP majority refused to do so.
As the Police Commissioner in office at the time of the investigation into the murder of Dr. Afrashim and as a contributor to the investigation by the Commission, MP Riyaz said that he did not take part in the review of the report.
MP Riyaz said that when the report came in, he told the Committee members that the public has questions regarding the murder. Riyaz said that he does not believe the Security Committee handled it the best way.
The former Police Commissioner said that even the oppositions raised questions about the report which was not addressed which in turn raises further questions.
Riyaz said that he provided all the information on the case to the Commission investigating the case and they would have an audio recording of it as well.
