President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said that the de-centralized system of local governance is an MDP idea and there is no confusion about it.
The President made the remark at the “MDP Thiladhunmathi Iruvai Conference” this morning at Kulhudhuffushi City.
He said that it is a system of local governance has been an idea when the party was originally formed as well and the party has always believed that the country cannot achieve true progress and development without de-centralization.
The President said that MDP tried to bring in that change during its previous tenure of running the country.
President Solih said that to achieve true success in the de-centralized system, Island, Atoll and City Councils have a major role to play as the new system increases the budgets for the councils along with the projects they have to run.
He said that the councils need to be empowered to develop the atolls and while new projects are coming in, developing human resources is also an important aspect for the councils.
The “MDP Thiladhunmathi Iruvai Conferene” is being attended by the Speaker of the Parliament and President of MDP, Mohamed Nasheed, Finance Minister, Ibrahim Ameer, Economic Minister, Fayyaaz Ismail and the Minister of Planning and Infrastructure, Mohamed Aslam along with a number of MDP MPs, members and MDP candidates in the upcoming Local Council Election.
