Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, Aishath Nahula, has said that a number of airports being developed across the country will be opening this this year.

Speaking on VTV’s “Fasmanzaru” program last night, the Transport Minister said that airport openings get delayed due to some challenges such as trained staff unlike some other places.

Minister Nahula also noted that there are a number of things there are a number of challenges in development of airports that include contract issues and those with the work schedule.

She said that six airports were in development last year which includes those at Funadhoo, Maavarulu, Madivaru, Hoarafushi and Faresmaathoda.

The Transport Minister said that although the Kulhudhuffushi Airport has been opened, there are upgrades that need to be made. And the airport is not being operated at a satisfactory level.

Faresmaathoda Airport, which is currently on scheduled to be completed, according to the Minister and the Funadhoo Airport will be opened this month while the Maavarulu Airport is set to open in March. Madivaru Airport is estimated to be opened in April and the Hoarafushi Airport is set to open in August.

And so, the new operational airports are going to improve air travel and connections for the public according to Minister Nahula.
