President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has decided to change Kulhudhuffushi in Haa Dhaalu to a City.

Making the announcement on Twitter, President Solih said that starting from 1 January 2020, Kulhudhuffushi is a city as per the Local Government Act.

Under the Act, an island will be declared a city when its population reaches 10,000 people. However, it needs to be declared by the President by law to be changed to a city.

Making Kulhudhuffushi a city was a campaign pledge of the current administration. The island reached its population to become a city in November 2019.

Kulhudhufffushi has become the fourth city in the country along with Male’, Addu, Fuvahmulah.
