A man who cashed several cheques at State Bank of India (SBI) has been kidnapped and robbed shortly after he left the bank.

According to Maldives Police Service, a foreign worker who cashed several cheques for a company was kidnapped and robbed. They however did not reveal any further details regarding the case.

A local media reported that an employee of the company revealed that the stolen cash amounts up to MVR 130,000. He was forced into a taxi and taken to a room in Hulhumale' where he was threatened at knife point, according to the employee.

The employee also added that the worker was released near the halfway house in Hulhumale', a secluded area with minimal lighting in the island suburb.

A similar robbery took place in the past as well while transferring large amounts of cash. Since then, Police had appealed to request their assistance when dealing with such large amounts of cash.
