Legal team of former President Abdulla Yameen has said that the state's move to take all funds in Yameen's account to the state is illegal.

They stated this in a press after the state had requested for an order at the Criminal Court to take funds from Yameen's account to the state.

In their statement, the legal team said that the verdict should clearly indicate whether any funds are to be taken under state care or not while issuing the verdict as per existing laws. They added that during no stage of the money laundering trial against President Yameen, did the state request or hint about taking the funds in question to the state.

The legal team also noted that the original verdict did not include any indication that the funds will be taken to the state, since they did not request to do so initially either.

The team further added that the state seeking such orders from the lower courts during the appeal process of the initial verdict violates President Yameen's right to appeal the verdict.
