President opens Tsunami Monument in Vilufushi
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has opened the Tsunami Monument in Thaa Atoll Vilufushi as part of his visit to the island for the National Unity Day function.
The monument built in the memory of the lives lost in the tsunami on 26 December 2004 was opened by the President at a special ceremony this afternoon.
The 2004 tsunami took the lives of 82 Maldivians while 26 people went missing following the disaster.
With 13,000 homes destroyed, only nine islands in the entire country were unaffected by the tsunami 15 years ago.
The National Unity Day is celebrated on 26 December commemorating the unity and the communitive spirit by the public to provide assistance those affected by the disaster.
This year, the Unity Day function is being held in on the island most affected in Maldives by the tsunami of 2004.
While the official function is set to start at 2 p.m. today in Vilufushi, President Solih arrived on the island this morning.
