Former Defence Minister and the current MP for Alifu Dhaalu Dhangethi constituency, Colonel-retired Mohamed Nazim has advised the government to focus on treatment instead of the capacity issues in prison.

In a tweet which tagged the President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and the Home Minister, Imran Abdulla, last night, the former Defence Minister said that rehabilitation in prison is more important that resolving the capacity issues in prison. He called on the President and the Home Minister to implement the policies to control crime.

Nazim has made the comments at a time where prison overcrowding is being discussed after the Home Minister said that there are 700 people more than the capacity in the custody of the Maldives Correctional Service.

Minister Imran said that efforts are being made to resolve the capacity issues. And so, more efforts are being made than the last ten years to improve the capacity at prisons.

He said that when the projects planned for next year are completed, there will be a major improvement in capacity. Minister Imran said that a prison development has been planned in Haa Dhaalu Atoll Neykurendhoo along with a reform of the prison system.
