Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom has said that the Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameedh had recently revealed concerning details regarding extremist activities in the Maldives, and added that we all need to be more careful.
Speaking at the 'Viyavathi Raaje' Councillor Conference CP Hameedh noted that Islamic State (IS) had planned to detonate an aerial bomb in the Maldives in 2017 and revealed that there were about 1,400 people with extremist ideologies.
He also added that 173 Maldivians have so far traveled to Syria to participate in the ongoing war, while 59 of them are currently alive. 91% of these 59 Maldivians are women and children.
On the note of what the CP revealed, President Maumoon said that these are rather concerning details and that the entire country should be more careful.
CP Hameedh highlighted that the Maldives is the country currently engaged in counter terrorism the most in South East Asia and assured that it will remain so in the future as well.
