President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said that the media has been freed from its shackles and started criticizing the government and it is something that is empowering.
The President made the remark at the International Human Rights Day function.
He said that opening up the freedoms of journalism and expression is not something any government should be afraid of and he would not hesitate to do so.
President Solih said that journalism in the country was in shackles when he took office and so his first priority was to free it and retracted the Anti-Defamation act.
It was a campaign pledge of President Solih to provide best opportunities for a free media in the country and has repeatedly said that he would ensure a free media.
President Solih has been advocating for the news media to hold the government accountable in his many speeches through different events.
