President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has inaugurated the renovations project at the Male’ City Hukuru Miskiy.
The cleaning of the mosque’s minaret began this morning after photos of the minaret with faded color among other defects hit social media.
Talking to the press after the inauguration ceremony today, Minister of Arts Culture and Heritage, Yumna Maumoon said that the minaret get severely affected by rain since it is constructed with corals which holds the moisture. She said that the renovations were scheduled some time ago but were delayed due to the weather.
Minister Yumna said that they are currently working with STELCO to wash the minaret and refurbish it which is going to be something that needs to be done regularly.
The Managing Director of STELCO, Hassan Mugunee said that if some requests to protect a national treasure, they would always provide assistance.
And so the minaret is an important national treasure and it is unacceptable that it be left uncleaned.
Mugunee said that they will include the cleaning of the minaret and the wells at the Hukuru Miskiy in their work schedule. And they will be working with the Heritage Ministry to keep the minaret refurbished.
