Presidential Commission on Deaths and Disappearances has requested the Prosecutor General's office to charge two who are believed to be the masterminds behind the murder of Dr. Afrasheem Ali, Ahmed Rilwan and Yameen Rasheed.
A tweet sent out by the commission noted that religious extremists Mohamed Mazeed and Saamith Mohamed are believed to be the masterminds behind the murder of all three. The commission noted that they had sent the case to the PG today, requesting them to move forward with the prosecution.
While the murder trial of all three remain mostly unclosed, the commission had previously said that local Al-Qaeda affiliate Jabhat al-Nusra were behind murders in the Maldives. The investigative report into the murder of Dr. Afrasheem further confirmed this.
The commission also noted that Mazeed and Saamith are among the top leaders of Jabhat al-Nusra.
Dr. Afrashim was found murdered near the stairwell of his residence on the night of October 01, 2012. Hussain Humaam has already been convicted of the murder.
Rilwan, a minvan news journalist was reported as missing in 2014. The commission's report revealed that Rilwan was kidnapped from Hulhumale', beheaded after which his body was dumped into the sea.
Yameen Rasheed who was a prominent blogger and one of the most vocal figures in the fight for justice for Rilwan was brutally murdered in 2017.
The commission asserted that all three murders were due to religious extremism.
