Maldives Police Service has made a number of arrests at the protest rally held by the opposition coalition last night while two people were injured.
Last night’s rally began in front of the PPM Office. Whe the participants gathered began marching towards the junction of Majeedhee Magu and Chaandhanee Magu, police officers near the Chinese Embassy obstructed the rally. The rally then went south on Boduthuakurufaanu Magu and went back to Majeedhee Magu through Sosun Magu and marched towards Chaandhanee Magu.
They were the obstructed by the S.O. officers of the police near the Lé Cute shop on Majeedhee Magu which forced the rally to go south on Nikagas Magu. However, the rally returned and protested in the area where the PPM Council Member, Ahmed Nareesh and Mohamed Lammaan along with PNC Council Members, Ahmed Adnan and Abdulla Mohamed were taken into police custody.
Lammaan is also the CEO of the TV station, Channel 13.
The rally later gathered near the PPM Office where the Vice President of PNC, Mohamed Nimaal and the PPM Council Member, Ali Adam was taken to the hospital after they fell on the ground during the confrontation with the security forces.
The opposition coalition said that Nimaal sustained major injuries to his arm.
Police arrested six council members from the opposition coalition along with two regular members at the protest rally last night.
The coalition has condemned the use of force by the police at a peaceful protest and has called for the release of the people in custody.
After the main opposition leader, the former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom was convicted of money laundering and sentenced to five years prison and fined with USD five million on Thursday, the opposition coalition has been conducting a series of protest rallies in the Maldivian capital.
