Three MPs are protesting at the parliament floor calling for the release of the former President, Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, who was convicted of money laundering and sentenced to five years in prison along with a fine of USD 5 million.

Naifaru MP Ahmed Shiyam, Guraidhoo MP Ghassan Maumoon and Maavah MP Mohamed Saeed were the members who protested during the start of the second session of the parliament sitting today.

The members were calling on for the release of President Yameen and alleged that President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had influenced the trial of President Yameen. They also added that the verdict on President Yameen was unconstitutional.

Criminal Court sentenced President Yameen to five years in jail and a USD 5 million fine for money laundering. He has since been taken to Maafushi Prison, where is to serve his prison time.
