Maldives Police Service has revealed that they have arrested Ismail hammadh of R. Maduvvari over the child bride case, and noted that there was enough evidence to move forward with a prosecution.
Speaking during a press conference held today, Superintendent of Police Hassan Haneef confirmed that Hammad was arrested under a court order yesterday and remains under the custody of the police. He added that the police was working on finding even more evidence.
The 13 year old girl who was allegedly 'married' to Hammad out of court had given birth to his child recently. Haneef, in response to journalists revealed that the DNA of the baby matched with the DNA of Hammad and asserted that there were enough evidence to prosecute Hammad.
Haneef also highlighted that the case is being investigated as a child sexual abuse case, which was first reported to the Police in February 14th of this year by the public.
Hammad was treated for several injuries after being stabbed on November 22. He was injured after a difference of opinion within his group of religious extremists and was later brought to capital Male' City for further treatment. He was arrested after being discharged from the Hospital.
