Former President Abdulla Yameen is scheduled to be transferred to Maafushi Prison today, where he will serve his 5 year jail term for money laundering.
Maldives Correctional Service revealed that the former President will be transferred sometime today. He is currently being held in Male' Prison.
However the exact time of the transfer was not revealed. They did however add that necessary details regarding the transfer will be made public once the transfer is complete.
The bench of five judges who oversaw the trial found him guilty of money laundering unanimously under the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter Terrorist Financing Act, article 53 (a) and was hence sentenced to five years in prison and USD 5 million under article 53 (b) of the same act.
The legal team of the former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has decided to appeal the sentence of USD five million fine and five-year prison time as they do not believe it a just verdict.
