Main ruling party MDP has announced the official results for their internal election held last Friday to elect a President and Vice President.

According to the results, the current Vice President of MDP and Minister at President's Office Mohamed Shifaz secured his position for another term. Shifaz received a total of 13,815 votes while North Hithadhoo MP Mohamed Aslam received a total of 10,840 votes.

The official results are announced at a time when MP Aslam rejected the results and formally lodged a complaint with 11 recommendations, claiming that his voter rights were grossly violated during the election.

Current President of MDP, Mohamed Nasheed was the sole contender for the position and received a total of 24,202 votes in favor of him in comparison to 421 that were against.

MDP previously revealed that while 87,439 people were eligible to vote at the election only 25,102 people had voted.
