A motion has been submitted to the Parliament to form a Dhivehi shipping line.

The motion was submitted by Manadhoo MP Mohamed Raai. In his motion, the lawmaker noted that the motion was being submitted in a bid to bring the concerns of maritime professionals to the attention of the authorities. These concerns revolve around difficulties in working in the maritime industry.

It further noted that the Maldives is dependent on sea travel and to further develop the maritime industry, Maldives Transport Authority needs to be restructured. The motion also spoke on the importance of establishing a Dhivehi shipping line for freight control of import goods and national security.

The presence of a shipping line previously was also mentioned in the motion along with the USD 12 million in revenue it brought in back then.
