Speaker of the Parliament, the former President of Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed has said that victory for the country can be achieved with words and not with swords.
Speaking at award ceremony of the writing competition at the Hulhudhoo School, Addu City, today, the former President said that Victory Day is connected to the Dhivehi language.
He said that Victory Day is being celebrated today because language was restricted back then. Nasheed said that with no avenue to express the people’s political disagreements, they went on the wrong path.
“Victory, we can achieve with our words. Not our swords. We can win with our tongues, not our fists.” Nasheed said.
Closing his address, the Speaker of the Parliament advised the students to write as much as possible.
Victory Day is celebrated in the Maldives in commemoration of the victory over the invading forces on 3 November 1988 where eight military officers and 11 pedestrians in Male’ City lost their lives.
