Newly appointed ambassadors of Sri Lanka, Cuba and the UK to the Maldives have all called upon foreign minister Abdulla Shahid.

The new Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Maldives Kohona Walawwe Nimal Dharmakeerthi Karunaratne was congratulated by the Minister during the meeting this afternoon.

During the meeting held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs discussed ways of further strengthening the existing close relations between the Maldives and Sri Lanka. The Minister assured his commitment to revive the existing bilateral ties between both countries.

The introductory meeting with the newly appointed Ambassador of the United Kingdom to the Maldives, Caron Röhsler took place shortly at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs after Ambassador Röhsler presented her letter of credence to President Solih in a ceremony held at the President’s Office.

During the meeting, Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid congratulated Ambassador Röhsler on her appointment and becoming the first resident Ambassador of the United Kingdom to the Maldives.

Foreign Minister Shahid expressed hope that the bilateral ties and cooperation between both the Maldives and the United Kingdom would be further strengthened during Ambassador Röhsler’s tenure. Both the Minister and the Ambassador also discussed in detail the progress on existing collaboration, particularly on counter terrorism, aviation security, environment and climate change.

Ambassador Röhsler assured her commitment to working with the Government of Maldives in strengthening the relations between the two countries, and reflected on her plans to deepen cooperation on areas of mutual interest.

The Ambassador of Cuba to the Maldives, Juana Elena Ramos Rodriguez paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abdulla Shahid, this afternoon as well.

During the meeting held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs this afternoon, both the Foreign Minister and the Ambassador held discussions on the existing bilateral and multilateral relations, and explored on expanding the cooperation between the two countries especially in the field of health and sports.

Foreign Minister Shahid was accompanied by Abdul Ghafoor Mohamed, Foreign Secretary and Mohamed Shaffau Ibrahim, Assistant Director at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
