The Maldivian Parliament has passed to appoint judge from the Drug Court, Mahaaz Ali Zahir, to the Supreme Court.

The decision was made at the parliament sitting today with the vote of 55 of the 64 MPs who attended the vote.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih sent the names of Judge Mahaaz and Fathimath Dhiyaana for review at the parliament to be appointed to the Supreme Court. The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) too, advised the President to appoint one of those who people to the position.

A position at the Supreme Court became vacant after the Supreme Court Judge, Abdulla Didi, was forced out of the position. The parliament removed Judge Didi from the Supreme Court on 28 August 2019.

With the new amendment by the current parliament, the number of judges at the Supreme Court has now been raised to seven. The two newly appointed judges to the Supreme Court are Dr. Azmiralda Zahir and Aishath Shujoon.

MDP issued a three-line whip to vote Mahaaz for the approval for the court.
