Parliament Committee on Public Accounts is set to probe the case of developing an international port project in Gulhifalhu, which was awarded to a foreign company without a proper bidding process.

Hanimadhoo MP Abdul Ghafoor Moosa proposed to probe the matter during the committee meeting held Wednesday. The committee had then decided to acquire related information regarding the project from relevant authorities.

Royal Boskalis Westminster N.V. was awarded the contract by the Ministry of National Planning and Infrastructure, for USD 53 million. The project is to be finished 180 days and as part of this program, the contractor will reclaim an area with an initial volume of six million cubic meters of sand using a mega sized trailing suction hopper dredger. Boskalis’ activities also include rock revetment work for shoreline protection.

Planning Ministry had previously stated that the contract was awarded in accordance to relevant regulations.
