Maldives Police Service has revealed that the situation regarding the controversial report by Maldives Democracy Network (MDN) is being misused to incite violence by certain people.
Police made the statement during a time when death threats were being issued to those who were linked to the report which allegedly mocked Islam and the Prophet.
A statement issued by Police noted that the issue was close to all Maldivians, and noted that they have been made aware of certain people using the situation to incite violence and encourage divisions in the society regarding the report and those involved in it.
The report highlighted that people have been calling for murder and violent acts agains those involved in the case in public spaces, with some going as far as holding rallies and protests in support of such actions.
The statement appealed all to refrain from doing such activities, and assured that they will remain steadfast in maintaining peace and stopping such acts of violence.
Posters calling for the murder of CP Mohamed Hameedh, Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed and MDN President Shahindha Ismail has been circulating around social media. Police have also confirmed that they are currently investigating this as a separate issue.
